Webtrends sees opportunity in online complexity | OregonLive.com

This is not your father's Internet.

Email and Web surfing have given way to smartphones and social networking. For businesses trying to keep up with who's on their site, and who's interested in their products, life gets only more complicated.

Webtrends aims to untangle that complexity. The downtown Portland company's roots date back two decades -- an eternity in the Internet age. It's the last big independent player in the specialized field of online analytics.

Large businesses turn to Webtrends to help them sort out the torrent of customer data that flows in and out of the Internet.

Webtrends

Business: Online analytics -- Webtrends helps businesses track activity on their websites and gauge interest in their products online and in social media.

History: Founded in 1993, sold to NetIQ in January 2001. Sold in 2005 to a group led by California private equity firm Francisco Partners.

Clients: A diverse list of big companies, including Aflac, Alcoa, AT&T, BMW, Ford, Hilton, Intel, Macy's, Microsoft, Reuters, UPS, Tektronix and Trader Joe's

Annual revenues: Around $100 million

Employees: 410, including 228 at Portland headquarters

Who's pondering a purchase? Who's shopping on a smartphone? What are they talking about on Twitter?

"It's more fragmented than it ever has been," said Martin Doettling, Webtrends' new, California-based chief marketing officer.

Webtrends once specialized in collecting online data. Now it crunches the numbers, too, to help clients understand where to put their marketing dollars and how to reach their own customers.

"The real value is to help them understand what happens in which (sales) channel," Doettling said, "and where the real impact is."

A survey last year by industry analysts at Forrester Research found that 84 percent of big companies use Web analytics in some form, and Webtrends' client list reflects that.

It works with technology giants such as Dell and Intel, carmakers BMW and Ford, and retailers including Macy's and Trader Joe's.

Forrester rated Webtrends among the leaders in a market that has grown more competitive over the past two years as Adobe and IBM bought Webtrends' two biggest rivals -- Omniture and Coremetrics, where Doettling worked before he joined Webtrends last summer.

"Webtrends finds itself at a crossroads as it transitions from legacy web analytics provider to cutting-edge digital analytics platform," wrote Forrester analyst Joe Stanhope.

Webtrends, Stanhope wrote, needs to provide "firm guidance" to its clients on how to use the data it provides. Otherwise, they'll drown in it.

As they cope with all that information, Doettling said, marketers also need to figure out how to reach customers. A billboard? A Tweet? A banner ad on a website?

Webtrends' goal is to provide the tools to help marketers refine their strategy and reach a variety of customers in a variety of ways: "What do I need to do to put these levers into perfect harmony?"

Web analytics sounds esoteric. It's a field most consumers never see.

It's just the reverse, actually: Analytics are the tools that big companies use to watch you.

Most consumers are aware, at this point, that big computers are monitoring their online activity. That's a creepy feeling, nonetheless, and often unwelcome. It's a sentiment Webtrends is acutely aware of.

The company has a "chief privacy officer," tasked with policing how the company and its clients use data -- and keeping up with emerging regulations in Europe and elsewhere over how online marketers handle personal information online.

New privacy laws make the Internet even more complicated, according to Webtrends chief executive Alex Yoder. But it also gives his company another role to play: a guide to help clients know what's appropriate and what's illegal.

"It's critical that we're the most educated on those," Yoder said. "That definitely adds additional complexity and need for expertise in our business that wasn't required in the past."

Webtrends is one of a tiny handful of Internet companies in Oregon that survived the dot-com bust.

It actually sold itself at the height of the dot-com bubble to a Silicon Valley company, NetIQ, for $1 billion in stock. When the bubble burst, the deal's value plunged --to just $250 million by the time it closed.

San Francisco private equity firm Francisco Partners bought Webtrends for $94 million in 2005. It's grown steadily -- if not spectacularly -- in the intervening years.

Webtrends won't disclose its growth rate or sales figures, but suggested that its annual revenues are approximately $100 million.

That's small by tech industry standards but not in Oregon, where only a dozen technology companies hit that mark last year.

Private equity firms like Francisco Partners don't typically buy and hold technology companies, and after Omniture and Coremetrics sold, Webtrends employees said privately that they believed their company was on the block, too.

They expected a sale or public stock offering by the end of 2011.

Francisco Partners typically holds its investments for five or six years, according to partner Neil Garfinkel, a Webtrends board member.

Seven years after it bought into the Portland company, Garfinkel said his firm is in no hurry to get out.

"From our perspective, it's likely that the biggest growth opportunity the company has ever faced is in front of them," he said.

Webtrends' long history with online data provides special expertise, according to Garfinkel.

In the era of "Big Data," when marketers could get lost in a forest of information, Garfinkel said Webtrends' technology can be a guide.

"They have a suite of products that, in our view, positions them as a leader."

More women are now heart specialists: India?s first woman cardiologist

Friday, September 28, 2012

New Delhi: At 93, she still does the rounds of the hospital she founded. Dr S Padmavati, India?s first woman cardiologist, says cardiology is a very demanding field that was keeping women away, but things are changing.

Dr S Padmavati

Dr Padmavati, chief consultant in cardiology at the National Heart Institute, said: ?There is no routine, no fixed hours? it is a very demanding field? so not many women choose to become cardiologists.

?But things are changing now, many women are coming forward as heart specialists,? Dr Padmavati told IANS in an interview.

According to 2010 figures from the American College of Cardiology, ?Women still account for less than 20 per cent of all cardiologists in the US. A 2009 census carried out by the Royal College of Physicians in the UK in three territories revealed that a mere 90 of the 766 cardiologists were females, or in other words not more than 11.75 per cent.

The situation is not very different in India, though there is no compiled data available.

Dr Padmavati said she never felt any sense of discrimination.

?All my male colleagues were very cooperative. In fact, I must say there is little discrimination in India. There was more antagonism against women in the West at the time. There it was tough even for a woman to get into a medical school,? she said.

The veteran led the group of doctors that founded the National Heart Institute, and is the founder president of the All India Heart Foundation.

Born in Myanmar, Dr Padmavati did her MBBS from Rangoon Medical College, followed by an FRCP from Royal College of Physicians, London and FRCPE from Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. She later shifted to the US.

She came to India only in 1953 and joined as a lecturer in Lady Hardinge Medical College, where she set up the cardiology clinic.

?When I joined Lady Hardinge, all women there were British. There was nothing in the cardiology department and we had to set it up. After that I also set up a cardiology department in G B Pant Hospital. We got Rs 5 lakh for setting up the cardiology department, today Rs 5 lakh is nothing,? said Dr Padmavati.

Her list of degrees includes a cardiology course in Sweden, a fellowship in John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore and Harvard Medical School.

Talking about the old days, she recalled how in 1981, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had come to inaugurate the National Heart Institute despite the day being Rajiv Gandhi?s birthday, August 20.

?Indira Gandhi was a very approachable woman, and a great leader. I just asked her and she agreed to inaugurate the institute even though it was on 20th August, Rajiv Gandhi?s birthday,? the doctor said.

?Politicians in those days were very approachable. You cannot think of the same now. I settled in India because of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur,? she said.

Kaur was the health minister of India for ten years after independence.

Talking about the incidence of heart disease among women, the veteran said the number of women heart patients across the world is huge, even though the common perception is the opposite.

?It is commonly believed that women are safe from heart diseases. But the fact is that more women die due to heart disease than breast cancer or cervical cancer,? said Dr Padmavati.

World Heart Day 2012, Sep 29, focuses on women and children as the theme for this year.

?More than 35 million women die of heart problems, and five million die of breast cancer. The difference is that women develop heart problems at a later age and the symptoms are different as well,? she said.

?Women have more atypical symptoms ? vague chest and abdominal pain, tiredness, vomiting, rather than the typical picture of cardiac pain which men experience. By the time they realise it is a warning of heart attack, it is too late,? Dr Padmavati said.

?Many times, the blockage in women?s arteries is not visible in angiography. The reason is that while men usually have blockage in the major arteries, women have blockage in smaller arteries which does not get detected,? she said, and added that a lot of research is needed in women?s cardiology.

Asked if heart problem in women has increased over the years, the doctor said awareness has increased, helping more cases be reported. [Source: IANS]

This 1964 Ford Mustang Ad Could Not Possibly Be More Boring

This 1964 Ford Mustang Ad Could Not Possibly Be More Boring I've been effusive in my praise of the first-gen Mustang in previous posts. I think it fully deserves the credit. The original Mustang was one of the most important cars ever made, and its design still looks great today. The baby boomer generation must have seen it as sex on wheels compared to the hulking, staid sedans their parents drove.

So how do you sell the Mustang to young people? Simple: you make the most boring commercial you possibly can. Wait, what?

That's exactly the approach Ford took when they made this ad, and it is quite possibly the most boring ad for a sporty car that I have ever seen. We see a young-ish stylist slaving over blueprints, striving to give the car a look of "total performance." Then the narrator goes on and on about the padded instrument panel, the sculpted side panels, the round rear openings and BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Get to the point, skip. I want to hear about engines and horsepower quotes. I want to see the car driving really fast. I want to see the driver actually having fun!

Oh look, it's driving next to some horses. I think I just fell asleep in my cereal bowl.

Luckily, Ford didn't need great ads for the Mustang to be a hit. The car started a revolution almost overnight, and for that, we're all better off. All I know is that Don Draper wouldn't have signed off on this ad. Way too boring.

What do you think of this ad, and classic Mustangs in general?

Update: As a few of you astute folks have pointed out in the comments, this may have been a dealer training film rather than a TV ad. Good eye! But it's still boring. Really, really boring.

An Enamel Badge Is the Perfect Award to Commend Unique ...

When you are in school what greater honour is there than to be promoted to Head Girl, Head Boy, House Captain or Prefect? It is an extremely great honour that comes with much responsibility and these important roles are chosen very carefully. As a way to commend these unique individuals, and to make them recognizable in their schools, an enamel badge is the perfect award. They will wear these beautifully made, durable badges with pride on the lapels of their blazers and keep them forever, possibly to one day inspire their children and grandchildren to follow in their footsteps.

These rewards distinguish a group of leaders from their peers, making them visible as they walk down the corridors in between classes, but an enamel badge can also signify being a part of a team. Schools have many teams of hardworking pupils from football to rugby and netball to rounders, and decorating the team with their own distinct enamel badge expresses their unity. Unique enamel badges can also be awarded to Team Captains, as well as Bronze, Silver and Gold awards for annual sports day events.

But why stop with sports colors? There are many other important roles and teams that deserve the high honour of brandishing a decorative badge, such as being a part of the art or chess club, the choir and school band. Also, to motivate a sense of citizenship within their school, enamel badges can be awarded to those individuals that exceptionally apply themselves, for example, ?Perfect attendance?, ?Most helpful? or ?Most improved?.

Schools and the houses within, all have a coat of arms or some kind of insignia that is displayed on the breast pockets of blazers and school ties. These designs on an enamel badge, something long-lasting and meaningful that can be kept forever, made available to all pupils for purchase would be a fantastic way for the school to raise some money, and also give everyone an opportunity to display their citizenship and pride for their school. Everybody likes to feel like they belong, whether it is the cricket team or simply signifying what school they attend and the house they belong to.

Your enamel badges can be awarded either in an exquisite leather box with satin lining, a card box for a less expensive but still a very elegant presentation, or on a backing card, all personalized with your school?s logo. These packaging options help to signify the honour, importance and distinction of being bestowed with a wearable trophy that will become a cherished keepsake.

Claire Appleton founded Insignia Ltd in 1981 and continues to run it as Managing Director today. Insignia are the UK?s leading supplier of Enamel Badges and have extensive experience in supplying branded school products and providing fresh ideas for school citizenship and fundraising activities.

Five ways to tax the 47 percent

Gleckman offers five suggestions for reducing the portion of Americans who do not pay federal income tax.

By Howard Gleckman,?Guest blogger / September 28, 2012

A 2011 1040 tax form along with other income tax forms are seen at the entrance of the Illinois Department of Revenue in Springfield, Ill., in this April 2012 file photo. Repealing the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit is one way Gleckman says the government can add more Americans to the tax rolls.

Seth Perlman/AP/File

Let?s say you are truly offended that 47 percent of Americans?don?t pay income tax.?Just complaining won?t?fix the problem. All those freeloaders are still out there, dodging their responsibilities as red-blooded taxpaying Americans. So, let?s stop fooling around and do something about it.

Skip to next paragraph Howard Gleckman

Here is my modest proposal. Five solutions to make sure everyone pays his or her fair share:

?1. Repeal tax credits,?such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit. These subsidies are the major reason?many low-income working families avoid the income tax. About one-third of those who don?t pay are families with kids. Because the credits go mostly to people who earn wages and phase out?slowly as income rises, they are a strong incentive to work.

This seems like a good idea. And it?s why refundable credits were once so popular with conservatives. In fact, they were the brainchild of iconic conservative economist Milton Friedman, who proposed a similar idea (called a negative income tax) 60 years ago.

Still, we could scrap the refundable credits and replace them with a direct cash payment to low-income working families. Of course, this would require a new bureaucracy to administer the program and force working people with kids to stand in a line somewhere to apply. Or, Congress could enact a big increase in the minimum wage. It won?t be easy, but we can make sure these freeloaders pay. Yet, there are still some people who would slip through our net.

2. Eliminate the standard deduction and personal exemption: This would capture another big chunk of non-payers. The only trouble is,?7 of every 10 households, or 107 million tax units, don?t itemize. Sadly for the anti-47 percent crowd, there are millions of people who take the standard deduction but still pay income taxes. For them, wiping it out would only raise their taxes. And it still leaves millions more of those? The?Wall Street Journal?once called ?lucky duckies? who don?t pay income tax.

3. Raise taxes on old people:?That brings us to the roughly one-quarter of those who don?t pay income taxes who are seniors. Those 65 and older get an extra standard deduction as well as a special tax credit. True, in 2009, one-third of those over 65 were living in or near poverty?and nearly 40 percent of elderly women were poor. And it is also true that, for many, their only source of income is their Social Security check, which is tax free for couples making $32,000 or less or singles making $25,000. If we start taxing the first dollar of these benefits, we can substantially reduce the number of these elderly deadbeats. Now, we just need to find a politician willing to sponsor such a plan. Bueller? Bueller??

4. Fix the economy.?Many pay no income tax because they, um, don?t make any money. And many have no income because they are unemployed, victims of what you may have noticed has been a tough economy. The Tax Policy Center estimates?that if the economy gets back on track, the percentage of those who don?t pay income tax would fall by about 10 percentage points. Thus, a bit more than one-third of households would fall into the deadbeat category, instead of nearly half.

5. Keep the No New Tax Pledge.?There is, however, a small problem with the first three ideas: They?d violate the anti-tax hike pledge signed by nearly all Republicans in Congress. How could we get around that? Easy as pie. Just cut taxes on high-income households to offset those tax hikes on the working poor. Just sayin.?

ADATAs got an 89mm thick portable USB 30 drive, limbos under the competition by a millimeter

When it comes to your device being the "world's thinnest" or not can be decided by a single millimeter. Just days after Toshiba unveiled its 9mm-thick 500GB external hard drive, ADATA has knocked a little more off its own enclosure and declared victory. It's releasing the DashDrive Elite HE720, a stainless steel USB 3.0 drive that measures in at 8.9mm-thick, and size is not the only department where it's making an end-run around ol' Tosh -- it's also $25 dollars cheaper, costing $90. In more mundane news, users who pick up the unit are entitled to snag a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security and it'll be available shortly.

GOP fires vendor after questionable registrations

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans on Thursday fired a vendor suspected of submitting 108 questionable new voter registrations in Florida's Palm Beach County, ground zero for disputed ballots in 2000's presidential race.

The Republican Party of Florida used Virginia-based Strategic Allied Consulting to help register and turnout voters in Florida, one of a shrinking handful of states President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney are contesting. The Florida state party had paid the firm more than $1.3 million so far, and the Republican National Committee used the group for almost $3 million of work in Nevada, North Carolina, Colorado and Virginia.

"We have zero tolerance for any threat to the integrity of elections. When we were informed of an alleged incident we immediately cut all ties to the company," RNC Communications Director Sean Spicer said.

The state party similarly sought to distance itself from the firm and its main operative, Nathan Sproul.

"We immediately informed the Republican National Committee that we were terminating the contract with the voter-registration vendor we hired at their request because there is no place for voter-registration fraud in Florida," state Republican Party Executive Director Mike Grissom said in a statement.

Strategic Allied Consulting said the suspected forms came from one person and the company was cooperating with elections officials in Florida.

"Strategic has a zero-tolerance policy for breaking the law," said Fred Petti, a company attorney. "Accordingly, once we learned of the irregularities in Palm Beach County, we were able to trace all questionable cards to one individual and immediately terminated our working relationship with the individual in question."

The company did not identify the individual.

Polls show Obama increasing his lead over Romney in Florida, a hard-fought state that hosted the GOP's convention last month. If Romney were to lose Florida and its 29 electoral votes, he would have to sweep other battleground states of Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada and New Hampshire to win the White House.

Palm Beach County Elections Supervisor Susan Bucher's staff noticed signatures that looked alike and incomplete forms submitted on Sept. 5 by Strategic Allied Consulting. Bucher met with prosecutors on Monday to request an investigation.

Palm Beach County was at the center of the ballot recount in 2000, with George W. Bush and Al Gore both contesting the results that seemed to give Reform Party nominee Pat Buchanan an unusually strong showing. Critics ? and legions of attorneys ? said the ballot design led many Gore supporters to cast votes for Buchanan.

The subsequent questions that arose about how ballots should be tabulated made their way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which settled the bitter contest in a 5-4 ruling barring a ballot recount. Bush won.

Sproul, a longtime GOP operative who leads Strategic Allied Consulting, previously worked for Romney's campaign through a separate firm, Lincoln Strategy Group. Romney spokeswoman Sarah Pompei says the campaign has not used Sproul since 2011, when the campaign was using Lincoln to collect signatures to get on primary ballots.

The deadline to register in Florida for Nov. 6's election is Oct. 9.

10:14 am, September 28, 2012

As the Cornwall Food and Drink Festival gets underway in Truro, Matthew Clarke talks to organiser Ruth Huxley and Cornwall Chamber CEO Kim Conchie.

As well as discussing this year?s festival (September 28-30), the pair talk about the Choose Cornish campaign to support local produce, which was officially launched at Truro Cathedral yesterday.

Liberal Democrat MP Dan Rogerson is lending his support to the campaign and said: ?I am in no doubt that Cornwall produces the finest food and drink in the country, and it is right that we do all we can to support high quality, locally produced, fresh and seasonal food, as well as the farmers and businesses that produce and sell it.

?Choosing Cornish is important because the money spent stays within Cornwall and the local economy, rather than going toward profits made outside the Duchy.?

Posted on by Stephen Tetlow

This extended mature detached house with Georgian styling and striking white pillars is situated on a generous plot in a semi rural location between the villages of Hartley Wintney and Odiham.

The spacious entrance hall leads to the 25ft ?L? shaped living room /dining room which provides plenty of space for the family to unwind in the living room area whilst still accommodating a sizeable dining table in the dining area. The practically styled kitchen /breakfast room provides a range of fitted units with tiled work surfaces, space for appliances and part tiled walls. To the breakfast area there is some fitted bench seating.

The kitchen/breakfast room provides access to the ?rear hall?, as part of the extension this portion of the house serves well as either additional living accommodation or as an annexe to the main house. This portion can also be accessed via the rear of the property and provides a wet room with ?Mira? electric shower and further two piece suite in addition to a 19ft reception room with brick fireplace, bay window and sliding doors to the side of the property and swimming pool.

Screened by trees and mature bushes the private rear garden extends round to the side of the property where the patio and swimming pool are found along with a tool shed and pool shed. There is a detached workshop building in the rear garden. We love the view from the front of the house across the fields and often sit watching the birds and wild life.? We needed space when an elderly relative came to live with us.? How To Get Business With Internet Marketing | Richard Jablonski ...

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

According to the way things are these days, affiliate promotion is a tried and true strategy to use in marketing. These programs have been used by webmasters to earn money for quite some time. There is a ton of information on affiliate promotion that can be had. From beginner to established affiliate marketer, the tips below will help you to hone and tweak your strategies for even greater success!

Consider peripherals as you place affiliate links throughout your site. You way want to consider a water bottle that has a strap, so they can bring it with them.

TIP! A pay-per-sale program in affiliate marketing should be signed up with some caution. If it works it can mean a lot of extra income for you! Do some research before you choose an affiliate, if you feel like it will work well for you, go with it.

To increase success in your online marketing, you need to rely on both front-end and back-end sales. If a customer has purchased an item because of your work, you should also get commission when they purchase the same item in the future. You can safeguard this potential profit by inspecting back-end commission terms before entering any affiliate partnership and sticking with the companies that are fair about these sales.

Hire an accountant to do your finances. Both flesh-and-blood accountants and software programs can do the job. A basic knowledge of accounting will serve you well and allow you to determine the profitability of your efforts. Get your accounting procedures in place before you open for business; it should be ready to use when you launch.

TIP! When an affiliate is putting new products out it will boost your commissions. If you want to benefit from residual income, find a reputable company that continually releases new products.

To improve as an affiliate marketer, set small goals for each day. You can stay motivated using a method that works best for you!

You should always do your research before you sign up with a company. Be sure you can get it out there without having issues.

TIP! Use screen shots of products and customer reviews to provide a better service for your customers. The more information that you can provide to a potential buyer, the better the chance that they will make the investment in the products that you are selling, and maybe send more business your way.

Not all affiliates have websites of equal quality. Certain ones can be very hard and frustrating to maneuver around. Website owners should not allow poorly designed affiliate sites to deter them from making financial gains. This will drive business and encourage people to buy things from you since it develops trust between you and your customers.

If you utilize banner ads, make one that has a trivia question which can only be answered by visiting your site. A lot of people are trivia buffs and cannot resist. You can also give those who answer the question correctly a discount, which is icing on the cake.

TIP! Find ways to make your affiliate links relevant to your site content. If you only have affiliate links for financial service products on your sports site, no one will click on them.

When backlinking to your site content, be honest about where you are taking your potential customers. A reader that clicks on a link labeled ?HP Tablet PC? will be quite irritated if the link takes him to your page that sells iPads instead. No amount of clever strategies will mask the dishonesty of this mismatch.

If you use pop-up ads on your website, switch and use pop-under ads. Most browsers block the pop-up ads, so your prospects may never see them anyway. Results have shown that pop-unders below the browser are more likely to be read instead of pop-ups.

TIP! Paid advertising can help you make large sums of money from ad programs. Well-placed advertisements will help increase both traffic and sales on your site.

To be a successful, goal minded affiliate marketer you must learn the best practices of affiliate marketing. A common mistake affiliates make is to jump at the first free program they see. There isn?t anything intrinsically wrong with this, but if the method isn?t effective, then the fact that it?s free doesn?t matter.

Advertise in various venues. For example, many customers compare products and prices using online services and are lured by the lowest price. Other customers will respond when you leave brochures and fliers in certain locations. Others might still need a percentage off coupon. The more platforms you advertise across, the more people you will attract.

TIP! Copious communication can protect and strengthen the bond between affiliate partners who find their relationship mutually beneficial. Building relationships through communication is an important part of ensuring continued profitability.

A lot of affiliates will get tasks in their email and then check them. Consider copying major points from your emails and reading them on a document program such as Microsoft Word. This way, you can save time by easily referring to a master document.

You will learn which advertisements are the most effective over time. Some people actually like Flash and Silverlight, while others are of the ?less is more? school of thought when it comes to advertising. You should always consider the type of audience you have when building ads.

TIP! Dip in to secret links. You can put links on your website?s text that will not stand out to your readers.

You should know what kind of incentive you will get with these companies. Are they capable of managing orders created from various sources like the telephone, fax and postal mail? You need to take proactive steps to make sure you are not getting short changed on any of the revenue that can be credited to your web marketing.

Lifetime commissions are quickly becoming a rare commodity in the affiliate marketing world. The rewards can be so great they are worth checking out. Affiliates bay marketers a commission of any sales that the marketers generate for the affiliate. Generally, a commission is paid if a product is bought withing a specific time frame. This is why they are worth finding.

TIP! when you choose an affiliate, you need to know your audience ahead of time. Choose advertising that complements the product or services you are selling.

You can make a lot of money with affiliate marketing. As you would find to be the case with any marketing strategy, doing research before you begin is key to your success

You may not want to sell anything on the net that is already wildly popular. Quality is important, popularity is not always so. On top of that, you run the risk of facing still competition. You might not possibly profit.

TIP! As is the case with any business when you are first starting out, you will need to invest money into the venture to make a profit later on. It is a wise idea to reinvest some of the profits from affiliate marketing into advertising.

Rajoy inches toward aid as protests, regions seethe

MADRID (Reuters) - Violent protests in Madrid and growing talk of secession in wealthy Catalonia are piling pressure on Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy as he moves closer to asking Europe for rescue money.

Rajoy has been resisting calls from influential domestic bankers and the leaders of France and Italy to move quickly to request assistance, but a series of events this week will drive him closer.

With protesters stepping up anti-austerity demonstrations, Rajoy presents more painful economic reforms and a tough 2013 budget on Thursday, aiming to persuade euro zone partners and investors that Spain is doing its deficit-cutting homework despite a recession and 25 percent unemployment.

Fresh data on Tuesday suggested Spain will miss its public deficit target of 6.3 percent of gross domestic product this year, as the central government deficit reached 4.77 percent at the end of August, already higher than the year-end target.

By front-loading the reforms Rajoy hopes to sell them to voters as home-grown rather than conditions imposed from outside. Diplomats reported intense last-minute pressure on Madrid from key euro zone policymakers to take tougher measures, notably on freezing pensions.

On Friday, Moody's will publish its latest review of Spain's credit rating, possibly downgrading the country's debt to junk status.

On the same day, an independent audit of Spain's banks will reveal how much money Madrid will need from a 100 billion euro ($129.62 billion) aid package that Europe has already approved for the euro zone's fourth biggest economy.

Spain's reluctance to seek a sovereign bailout - a condition for European Central Bank intervention to cut the country's borrowing costs - could propel the euro zone into deeper trouble.

Rajoy moved one step closer to requesting aid, suggesting in an interview with the Wall Street Journal published on Wednesday that he would make the move if debt financing costs remained too high for too long.

"I can assure you 100 percent that I would ask for this bailout," he told the newspaper, calling the situation he faces right now "fascinating."

He also said he had not made his mind up on whether to maintain inflation indexation of pensions, which could cost the state an extra 6 billion euros this year.

"We need to be sufficiently flexible in order not to create any further problems," he said when asked about pensions.

His comments helped drive the premium investors demand to hold 10-year Spanish debt rather than benchmark German bonds up to 445 basis points on Wednesday, the highest level since early September.

Markets were also reacting to a letter from Germany, Finland and the Netherlands on Tuesday that implied that rescue funds Spain receives for its banks will remain on its public debt. The three said any future direct recapitalization of banks by the euro zone's bailout fund should not cover "legacy" problems.

CATALONIA INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT

The government's drive to rein in regional overspending as part of its austerity measures has prompted a flare-up in independence fervor in Catalonia, the wealthy northeastern region that generates one-fifth of Spain's economic output.

Just as the euro zone crisis has strained relations between wealthier nations of the north and heavily indebted countries to the south, Spain's crisis has aggravated tensions between the central government and its self-governing regions.

Catalonia is broke and needs a 5 billion euros bailout from the central state to meet debt payments this year, but Catalans are convinced they bear an unfairly large share of the country's tax burden.

More than half say they want independence from Spain, the highest level ever.

Artur Mas, the conservative president of Catalonia, announced on Tuesday he would hold early elections in November after Rajoy rejected his call for more tax autonomy.

The vote, likely to be presented politically as a referendum for secession, is a challenge to Rajoy, who's People's Party has threatened to take central control over the budgets of regions like Catalonia that fail to meet deficit reduction targets.

Catalonia would face a number of constitutional hurdles to secede, and such an outcome is seen as unlikely any time soon.

Analysts say Mas is using the growing independence sentiment as a threat over Madrid to secure more fiscal autonomy.

"At a time when the PP could use the crisis to limit autonomy in the regions, Mas is engaged in a defensive move to try to shift things the other way," said Enric Juliana, Madrid bureau chief for Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia.

COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS

Anti-austerity groups planned a fresh demonstration on Wednesday evening in Madrid, a day after police fired rubber bullets at thousands of protesters who tried to form a human chain around the parliament building.

Police arrested 28 protesters on Tuesday and 64 police and demonstrators were injured in the clashes.

The relatively small but intense protests this week have added to Rajoy's image problems abroad.

Officials in Brussels and Berlin have accused him of failing to sell his reforms effectively, partly because of confusing messages from his separate treasury and economy ministers and from his own office.

"The problem in the structure of his economic cabinet is transmitting a confused, improvised image," said an economist, who did not want to be named and who said Rajoy will have to name a powerful economic deputy by the end of the year to sort out his communications issues.

The governments of Ireland, Portugal and Greece were all voted out of office after they sought bailouts from Europe.

But Rajoy may have more staying power, especially if he negotiates a bailout "lite", such as a precautionary credit line from the European bailout fund that would not involve taking Spain out of the credit markets.

The uncharismatic conservative has more than three years left to his term and his People's Party has firm control of parliament, with no signs so far of party splits that might force him out early.

How Twitter will make you stop obsessing about how many followers you have

Legions of fake followers may no longer inflate a person's coolness factor

Sometimes it can seem like Twitter is chock full of phony or silent feeds. In fact, only 1 in 4 accounts actively posts tweets, according to research by social media research firm Semiocast. The leaders of the popular social network are aware that these unused and fake accounts can be used to inflate follower numbers, making some people seem more important and relevant than they actually are. As a result, Twitter is considering ways to downplay your follower numbers and focus on how many friends actually read what you're tweeting.

Twitter co-founder Evan Williams spoke at a BuzzFeed panel in New York about some of the changes up for consideration. "The dream metric is how many people saw your tweet," he said.?It's unlikely that Twitter will end the use of follower numbers completely, but some additional information about how involved a person is on the network could be a more accurate depiction of their presence. Besides, if the team can figure out a way to glean that level of detail, individuals could one day find out exactly which of their friends read their updates. It would mean better, clearer communication on the network.

Considering how important social media engagement is for businesses, for celebrities, and for politicians, a clearer picture of Twitter influence would certainly be welcome. So as long as there's no effort to crack down on some of the great fake personas on Twitter, we're all for this change.

Americans urged to get vaccinated as flu season nears

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. health officials urged more Americans on Thursday to get vaccinated against influenza for the upcoming flu season, adding there was plenty of vaccine on hand.

So far more than 85 million doses of the vaccine had been distributed as of September 14 and a total of about 135 million doses will be available, the non-profit National Foundation for Infectious Diseases said.

The flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Howard Koh, assistant health secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services, said there was no guarantee that the 2012-13 flu season would be mild like the last one.

"When it comes to flu, we can't look to the past to predict the future," Koh told a news conference.

The 2012-13 vaccine has one strain in common with last year's - the A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus. Its two new ones are A/Victoria/361/2011(H3N2)-like virus and B/Wisconsin/1/2010-like virus.

He and officials from other health organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, urged vaccination as a first-line defense against the flu. A nurse vaccinated Koh at the news conference.

They also said hand washing and coughing into an elbow rather than a hand were important flu-fighting tools.

The overall U.S. vaccination rate for the last flu season was steady at about 42 percent, according to CDC numbers released at the conference.

The figure is well below target rates of 80 percent for people between 6 months and 65 years and 90 percent for those over 65. Vaccine recommendations were expanded to all healthy adults two years ago.

Vaccination rates varied widely, with children between 6 months and 23 months at 75 percent, falling to just over a third among adolescents, the CDC said. About 39 percent of adults were vaccinated.

Factors keeping people from getting vaccinated include fear that they will get sick, cost and lack of awareness, Koh said.

A Ray of Hope

Every day until the election, Slate will offer up one reason to be optimistic for your candidate.

Today?s Good News for Obama: Seven in 10 Americans assume the Affordable Care Act will go into effect?whether they like it or not. Considering Romney promises to repeal all or most of the law on his first day in office, these numbers indicate that Americans?and many conservatives?are slowly resigning themselves to the real possibility that a Romney presidency will never happen. Only 12 percent of those polled believe Obamacare will be repealed in its entirety, even though a mere 32 percent of Americans actually support the law. In spite of its divisiveness, the health care issue has taken a back seat on the campaign trail, and it?s looking like an increasingly settled issue. To Obama, this might also look like an increasingly settled election.

Mayor shouldn't gamble with budget | Editorial | Opinion | Ottawa Sun

Ottawa could get new casino
Ottawa Sun file photo.

Report an error

Mayor Jim Watson is right to champion the creation of a new Ottawa casino.

Although his recent comments are no surprise to us. Remember he?s the politician who, months ago, spoke with dismay at the number of Ontario licence plates he saw across the border in Lac Leamy.

Some people are expressing shock that a politician holds an opinion on a matter, rather than simply gleaning his stance from staff reports and public deputations. Sorry, but we prefer our politicians with robust views. Even if we fight them hard when we disagree!

The primary naysayers will be the public health crowd who tell us the adverse effects gambling will have on residents. True or not, these reports have always displayed a startling disregard for the fact that people have free will. It?s not like we can ban people from visiting Lac Leamy.

But what is new are the mayor?s comments that casino revenues can in turn be used to fund infrastructure expenses. His remarks worry us that he?s going to, pardon the pun, gamble on the budget.

Sure, the city has only just woken from its big spender hangover to realize it is hundreds of millions behind on infrastructure spending. But that?s not justification for cobbling together more revenue streams. It?s justification for cutting down the frills. We should be opening a casino because of demand for a casino, not because we?re cash-strapped.

We?re addicted to debt and addicted to finding alternate revenue streams. It?s a vicious circle. If the city predicts a certain amount of annual revenue from the casino and budgets with that in mind, we?re just setting ourselves up for more debt. Especially if those projections fall short (and government projections almost always do).

Yes, let?s go forward with this. The questions of where to put it and how to go about it are more detailed, of course. Economic benefits are no guaranteed home run. The numbers have to work. The size, the location, and the rest of the details have to work. Or else taxpayers will be on the hook ? which isn?t impossible, as other Ontario slots and casinos have experienced operating losses in the past.

So let?s allow government to put the same old fear tactics to rest and get on with sussing out the details.

balanced length. +719211, $19.95, QPR: 90.
3. First Press Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2009 and 2010: I had the
opportunity through the LCBO Press Tasting Lab to try both vintages ? I
thought the 2010 was better, if a bit more tannic, moving it into the
"food" arena. It might be interesting, if you were to have a
party/dinner, to sip the 2009 but pour the 2010 with food. 14.5% ABV
for each.? +188110 each, $19.95, QPR: 89.
4. Hogue Genesis Merlot 2008 Columbia Valley Washington State: great
value for US oak tones, menthol, black fruit and mocha. +349415,
$20.95, QPR: 89.
5. Luis Segundo Valle Las Acequias Oak Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Mendoza:
how do they do this wine so inexpensively? Well-rounded and aged,
ready, oak, deep length, 3.5% ABV. +287516, $15.95, QPR: 90.
6. Blue Pyrenees Shiraz 2009 Victoria: tasty aging, ripe fruit and some
leather-sandalwood, 14% ABV. +935890, $19.95, QPR: 89.
7. La Giraudiere Clos des Meuniers Saumur-Champigny 2010: top stuff for
cabernet franc, with its Euro complexity. Ignore the Bronze medal decal
(why did they bother?) ? It's better than that. +290122, $16.95, QPR:
89.
8. Colli Ripani Castellano Rosso Piceno Superiore 2007: great blend of
montepulciano and sangiovese, long finish, definitely needs food, 14%
ABV. +174086, $16.95, QPR: 89.
9. Produttori Vini Manduria Riserva Salice Salentino 2008 IGT Puglia:
delicious, with underbrush, mushrooms, berry fruit, leather, 13.5% ABV.
10. Rocca Delle Macie Chinati Riserva 2008: good value MVC Chianti
wine, 13.5% ABV. +111641, $15.95, QPR: 89.
11. Triacca Spadino 2010 IGT Maremma: herby, food-driven wine, 13.5%

Catalyst Assembly | Make the Change | Commune | Love | Prosper

Catalyst Makes Call Out For Change-Makers to Gather

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Others prefer to build him a pond or give him a pole or even introduce him to the local fishery for a job. ?Whether it is through relief work or empowerment or civic engagement, many people have different approaches for changing the world but they all have good intentions in common. Long Beach non-profit Catalyst is calling all agents of social change together for its annual gathering, the Assembly of the Catalyst Network of Communities. On Saturday, October 20, 2012 from 11:00am to 5:00pm, Catalyst is bringing together its broad network of change-makers to the newly opened Catalyst Center for Urban Sustainability,?1730 Long Beach Blvd, Long Beach, CA 90813?(one block south of Pacific Coast Highway at Esther Street).

?A catalyst is a person who sparks social change,? says Eric Leocadio, founder of Catalyst. ?These are individuals who know their neighborhoods need to be improved, believe in possibilities, and take the initiative in participating in that change in some way. Anyone can be a catalyst. We are building a community of catalysts. If one person can make a difference, then imagine what a thousand of us can do.?

Imagine what it would be like for them to gather in one place for a day of shared vision, inspiration, ideas, and examples of projects, programs, and ventures geared towards social change. In addition to being a convergence of social change-makers, the Assembly will also feature 20 community groups that have been adopted by the Catalyst organization to function as one of its many programs. These programs encompass a variety of focus areas some of which include the arts, children, teenagers, nutrition, health, fitness, wellness, autism, music, dance, business, sobriety, LGBT, faith, volunteerism, Filipino culture, the environment, urban agriculture, gardening and backyard farming.

?The Assembly event will begin with a free ZUMBA kick-off by Team ZUMBA USA at 11:00am followed by a day of presentations, speakers, musicians, dancers and performers.? There will be special music by the Spanish fusion sounds of Romero y Perez and also the Spanish folk music of Elisa de la Pe?a.

Concurrent with the Assembly event, it will also be the grand opening of the new Catalyst Center for Urban Sustainability. Having been referred to as the bike HUB for two and a half years where people could learn to repair and maintain their bikes, Catalyst decided to expand the use of the space into a much larger endeavor providing an interactive learning space for residents and visitors to explore tangible applications of sustainability in an urban environment. The new Catalyst Center will feature 4 education stations for water, solar, recycling, and bikes, a mobile container garden called the Urban Oasis, and a butterfly cove. The new DIY Maker Space will provide tools and equipment for artists, up-cyclers, crafters, and builders to work on their do-it-yourself projects. The HUB bike shop will continue to give cyclists and would-be riders a place to work on their bikes. And the Long Beach Free Store will officially be re-opened, operating out of a donated shipping container, to provide a place for people to donate items in good condition and to give everyone a place to shop for free.

Catalyst encourages attendees of the Assembly to bring items for the Free Store, a list of events to add to the community calendar, and lots of business cards.
