A champion bodybuilder who blackmailed men over the internet when posing as a ?young and sexually available woman? was today jailed for at least 15 months.

County Court Judge Peter Wischusen said Shawn Rye, 23, of Croydon, had engaged in pre-meditated, carefully contrived and repeated threatening behaviour which had left his victims exposed and powerless to resist.

?Blackmail is a cowardly offence,? Judge Wischusen told Rye.

?Crimes of this nature are easy to perpetrate and difficult to detect.?

The unemployed Rye would engage in live chat room conversations with young men on the internet and then demand money from them by threatening to reveal sexually explicit images he had taken of them to their family and friends.

The judge said Rye used the names of the victims? family and friends he had taken from their Facebook page to make the threats more real and alarming.

He stole nearly $8000 from the men and used the money to pay for bills and to support his bodybuilding career where he was spending $300 a week on protein powders.

The 43 men he blackmailed over a six-month period last year came from Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Rye, the 2010 Victorian junior bodybuilding champion, pleaded guilty to 47 charges of blackmail. One victim was blackmailed three times and two others twice.

The maximum sentence for blackmail is 15 years.

Judge Wischusen said Rye had been obsessed with bodybuilding after leaving school at the end of Year 10, which had affected his capacity to find a job.

A psychological report revealed Rye had low self-esteem and poor social skills.

His father had abandoned him when he was an infant and he had a speech impediment which had made his school life difficult.

The judge said Rye was remorseful and his prospects of rehabilitation were quite good as long as he continued to receive counselling to deal with his ongoing issues, including anxiety and depression.

Rye would pretend to be a young and sexually available woman on webcams and called himself either ?Sam? or ?Melissa?.

He would play a pre-recorded video of a young woman to the men on his webcam and then urge them to strip naked and masturbate on a promise that ?she? would then strip naked.

When the men had performed the sexual acts, Rye would show a recording of what they had been doing on the computer screen.

He would then send a text message demanding that the men pay him money or the video recording would be released to family and friends via Facebook and other web pages.

Demanding amounts from $100 to $500, Rye would send the men texts which read:

?read what I am telling u Option 1 is you don?t co operate and i wont hesitate to upload this video and send the link to everyone. Option 2 is you send me $300 and no one will ever see this video and ull never hear from me again. if you don?t co operate I will upload it and show 1 person a day until u see im serious and then u can contact me via email when you want to pay and ill stop showing people. Dont waste your time trying to track my ip (internet provider) as im using a proxy ip that cant be traced. if u go offline or don?t co operate I will upload the video of you w?ing to a gay website.?

Despite the threats, Rye never uploaded the images.

Judge Wischusen jailed Rye for two years and six months with a non-parole period of 15 months.
